This Blueberry Banana Smoothie is a delicious way to get more nutrients into your day. Made with frozen blueberries and banana, it comes together in just minutes.

Blueberry smoothies can be tricky to get right. These berries aren’t super sweet on their own, especially when frozen, so they need to be paired with something sweet and tangy for the best flavor.

In this case, bananas add a creamy sweet texture, and the addition of orange juice brightens it up without the need for extra sweetener. My kids go crazy for this combination, and I love that they’re getting an extra boost of vitamins and minerals with each sip.

Ingredients You’ll Need

All you need for this blueberry banana smoothie recipe are frozen blueberries, frozen banana, orange juice, and your favorite milk. Unsweetened almond milk or vanilla almond milk will keep this recipe dairy-free, but you can also use cow’s milk or coconut milk, depending on your preference.

Ground flax seed makes this smoothie more filling, and you can add a scoop of protein powder, rolled oats, or a big handful of spinach if you’d like. Greek yogurt or chia seeds can also be added!

Using orange juice in this recipe adds a tangy and sweet flavor, but if you don’t have it on hand, a squeeze of lemon juice and a touch of honey would give you a similar result.

Have other fruit to use?

Frozen strawberries, pineapple, or mango can be used as a swap for some of the frozen blueberries.

How to Make the Best Blueberry Smoothie

In a high-speed blender, add the liquids, frozen berries, banana, and ground flax seed, along with any other add-ins you like.

Secure the lid and blend until smooth. The texture should be smooth and slightly slushy, thanks to the frozen fruit.

Once there are no more visible chunks, taste the smoothie and make any adjustments you see fit. Add another tablespoon of liquid if it hasn’t reached your desired consistency, or add some ice cubes if you’d like a thicker texture. (Just keep in mind that added ice will dilute the flavor slightly.)

Serve this banana blueberry smoothie right away for the best taste and texture. It makes a delicious morning drink, or you can use it as the base of a smoothie bowl with your favorite toppings.

If you have any leftovers, pour them into a mini popsicle mold and store them in the freezer for an easy snack later.

Nutrition information is for half the batch. This information is automatically calculated and is just an estimate, not a guarantee.
Note: Make sure you use an orange juice you love for the best flavor. (I like Whole Foods’ 365 brand.) For a lower sugar option, you can use more milk as a swap, but the smoothie will not taste nearly as delicious.
