Easy Halloween Dip Tutorial
Start by making a batch of your favorite bean dip. (Printable recipe below!) Spread it out on a large round platter or plate.
Note: Refried beans, 7-layer dip, guacamole, or queso will also work as the base for this dish.
Since this recipe moves quickly, slicing your garnishes is next. Start by slicing black olives in half. You’ll need a half for each “spider” you want to add.
Then, cut a few more black olive halves into smaller pieces. These will be the spider “legs.” You’ll need eight legs per olive half. You may also want to slice some green onion, tomatoes, and cilantro to decorate your platter.
When you’re ready to serve, fill a plastic sandwich bag or pastry bag with sour cream or Greek yogurt. (If needed, use a dairy-free alternative to keep this vegan.) Cut off a tiny corner of the sandwich bag with scissors, creating a quick piping tip.
Pipe the sour cream or yogurt into a large X shape over the dip. Then, add two more diagonal lines, making it look like a simple star. Next, start adding the web pattern to complete the spiderweb look. (See photos for reference.)
Arrange 3 of the black olive halves on top of the sour cream web. These will be your spider bodies. Then add 4 legs on each side, creating an edible spider.
Finish off the look by sprinkling some shredded cheese around the edge of the dip. Garnish with green onion, tomatoes, and cilantro.
Then, this spooky Halloween dip is ready to serve immediately!
Detoxinista Tip
Add the spiderweb shortly before serving, as the sour cream can start to melt into the dip at room temperature. It will still look amazing, even if it gets a little messy, though.
Bonus Halloween Appetizer Ideas
If you want to create an array of fun Halloween dips, here are some extra options.
1. Ghost Dip.
If you need a super-easy option, make your favorite ranch dressing look like a ghost! I found this fun ghost-shaped bowl at Target to make the dip more ghost-like, but even if you use a round bowl, it will still look like a ghost when you add two sliced olives for eyes plus an olive half for a mouth.
You can decorate the eyes even more by adding a small sliced radish on top of each eye, plus a little green pea sliced in half to be “pupils.” Get creative with any veggies you have on hand!
Serve with dark blue corn tortilla chips to make the white ghost dip “pop” even more.
2. Pretzel Witch Fingers with Cheese Dip
This option is a little more labor intensive because it requires making soft pretzels that look like witch fingers, but they are so fun! Find the full Pretzel Witch Fingers tutorial here. (My recipe is gluten-free, but you can use any other soft pretzel recipe you love.)
Serve these soft pretzels with nacho cheese dip or honey mustard for a delicious Halloween snack.
3. Graveyard Dip.
For a fun treat, turn your favorite dark-colored dip, like Chocolate Hummus or Bean Dip, into a spooky cemetery.
For this look, melt some chocolate chips and let them cool slightly.
Transfer the melted chocolate to a piping bag (or ziplock bag with an end cut off), and pipe the letters “RIP” onto graham crackers, or use a rice cracker for a gluten-free option.
Stick the tombstones into the dip for a graveyard look. When using a sweet dip, you can add some shaved chocolate or mini chocolate chips on top, too, which makes it look even more like dirt.
4. Puking Pumpkin Platter.
Carve a jack-o-lantern with squinty eyes and a big open mouth. Then, place it next to a serving platter and add guacamole to the center.
Arrange the guacamole so it looks like it’s coming out of the pumpkin’s mouth, then surround the dip with tortilla chips and sliced veggies for dipping.
You can use store-bought guacamole for this recipe, but the flavors are so much better when you make it fresh! Plus, if you are serving picky eaters, you can control the amount of jalapeño, salt, and garlic inside.
5. Mummy Pizzas with Marinara Dip
This easy idea is especially a hit with kids! Top your favorite sliced bread, bagels, or even sweet potato toast with marinara sauce and thin slices of white cheese (slice it off a block or use string cheese).
Arrange the cheese to look like mummy wrapping, and use black olives to make mummy eyes.
Bake the mini pizzas in the oven at 400ºF until the cheese is melted, about 8 to 10 minutes. Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping.
6. Monster Dip.
Start with a bowl of guacamole for a green monster look, or use any other dip you love.
Arrange two sliced radish pieces on top of the guacamole and add the sliced black olives over the radish slices. Red bell pepper can be used for lips, and jicama or more radish can be sliced into triangles to make pointy teeth.
Adding sliced bell peppers and carrots to the top makes the monster look like it has crazy hair, and is also perfect for dipping.
In case you’re wondering, I used five avocados to make this bowl of guacamole. If you’re trying to make enough to serve a crowd, you’ll need to use a minimum of four avocados.

Bean Dip
- 2 (15-oz.) cans black beans , drained and rinsed
- ¾ cup salsa
- ½ teaspoon fine sea salt , plus more to taste
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- ¼ cup fresh cilantro (optional)
- 6 to 8 jarred jalapeño slices (optional)
Spider Web Garnishes
- 5 large black olives , pitted
- ½ cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
- shredded cheese, green onion, tomatoes, cilantro (optional for the edge of the platter)

To prepare the bean dip, add the drained black beans, salsa, salt, cumin, jalapeno slices, and cilantro to a 12-cup food processor fitted with an S blade. Secure the lid and process until smooth. Taste the dip and add more salt, if needed. (Add a ¼ teaspoon at a time until it tastes flavorful. I usually add an additional ½ teaspoon of salt, but this could vary based on the salsa you use.)

Spread the prepared bean dip in a circle on a large plate. Then, add the sour cream or Greek yogurt to a piping bag fitted with a narrow decorating tip. You can also use a ziplock bag and cut one of the ends off to create a quick piping option. (Just a tiny corner will do—you want the tip to be small.)

Pipe the sour cream into the shape of a spiderweb, first by making an X over the dip. Add 2 more diagonal lines, then make connecting lines in the center to create a spiderweb look. (See the photos in the post for reference.)

Slice the black olives in half. Reserve 3 or 4 of the halves for “spider bodies.” Then, cut the remaining halves into thin pieces to create spider “legs.” Arrange an olive half, cut side down, on the spiderweb, then place 4 legs on each side to look like a spider.

Garnish the perimeter of the plate with shredded cheese, green onion, tomatoes, and cilantro, if desired. Serve the dip right away with tortilla chips or sliced veggies.
Make Ahead Tip: You can prepare the bean dip up to 4 days in advance as long as you store it in an airtight container in the fridge. Decorating this dip should take about 10 minutes, so it’s an easy option to throw together.
